In a bold move to revolutionize the e-learning space, Spotify has announced the addition of video learning courses to its platform, marking a significant expansion beyond its traditional audio-centric offerings.
This innovative experiment, currently available to users in the United Kingdom, integrates educational content from renowned providers like BBC Maestro, Skillshare, Thinkific, and PlayVirtuoso, directly into Spotify’s mobile and desktop applications.
Spotify’s foray into video-based e-learning courses caters to a diverse array of interests, offering four main categories: ‘Make Music’, ‘Get Creative’, ‘Learn Business’, and ‘Healthy Life’. These carefully curated courses aim to empower users to explore new skills and knowledge areas, all within the familiar Spotify interface.
In line with Spotify’s user-friendly approach, the platform allows both free and premium subscribers to access at least two video lessons from each course at no cost. Those seeking to delve deeper can purchase the full courses, thereby unlocking a wealth of information and expertise at their fingertips.
While three videos from each course are available for free, users can access the complete courses by paying a one-off fee. For instance, MJ Cole’s course on creating a two-step garage beat costs £24.90, Sarah Story’s radio demo course is priced at £29.90, and Joris Voorn’s melodic techno course is available for £34.90.
Spotify’s VP of Product Development, Babar Zafar, highlighted the platform’s significant user engagement with educational podcasts and audiobooks, suggesting a strong potential market for these video courses.
This initiative comes at a time when Spotify is also celebrating the success of Daft Punk’s ‘Get Lucky’, which recently hit the one billion stream milestone. However, it contrasts with the company’s recent layoffs aimed at reducing costs.
Leveraging its vast user data, Spotify promises a personalized learning experience by recommending courses that align with listeners’ interests and listening habits. This targeted approach not only enhances user engagement but also offers course providers a unique opportunity to reach a broader audience.
While the current experiment is limited to the UK, the success of this initiative could lead to a global rollout, transforming Spotify into a hub for not just entertainment but also education and personal development.
