A bold prediction by Jensen Huang – Nvidia CEO on Coding that artificial intelligence (AI) will render coding skills irrelevant in the near future, and that children should focus on developing their expertise in other domains.
Nvidia CEO Predicts Death of Coding at the Word Government Summit in Dubai, where he argued that the rapid advancements in AI, especially in natural language processing (NLP), will enable anyone to program computers using their native language, without having to learn specific coding languages like Java or Python.
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said that AI will replace programmers and do the work of coding, so kids don’t need to learn computer science or programming languages. He claimed that AI tools like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini can understand human prompts and create code accordingly.
“Over the last 10-15 years, almost everybody who sits on a stage like this would tell you that it is vital that your children learn computer science, everybody should learn how to program. In fact, it is almost exactly the opposite,” he said.
“It is our job to create computing technology such that nobody has to program. And that the programming language is human, everybody in the world is now a programmer. This is the miracle of artificial intelligence,” Huang said at the summit.
He added that the time and effort spent on learning to code should instead be invested in upskilling in areas such as farming, biology, manufacturing and education, where AI can be applied to solve real-world problems.
“Learning to code was once a vital skill, but in today’s world, it holds little value. You now have a computer that will do what you tell it to do. It is vital that we upskill everyone, and the upskilling process will be delightful and surprising,” he said.
Huang’s views have sparked a debate in the tech community, with some agreeing that AI will change the nature of coding and create new opportunities, while others disagreeing that coding will become obsolete and that AI will pose a threat to human jobs and creativity.
As Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang advised don’t learn to code, John Carmack, a co-founder of ID Software and a pioneer of 3D graphics, agreed, stating that “coding” was never the source of value and that problem solving was the core skill.
However, many others expressed their skepticism and criticism of Huang’s, Nvidia CEO on coding claim, saying that AI will not replace human coders but rather augment them and that coding is not just a technical skill but also a creative and expressive one. Some also mentioned that AI’s harmful effects.
The debate over the future of coding and the impact of AI is likely to continue, as AI technologies become more powerful and accessible, and as coding becomes more ubiquitous and diverse. Whether AI will make coding obsolete or not, it is clear that coding will not remain the same as it is today.
