Apple has officially pulled the plug on its much-hyped Apple Car Project, also known as Project Titan. The ambitious venture, which aimed to revolutionize the automotive industry, has met an untimely demise. But fear not this isn’t the end of Apple’s innovation journey.
For nearly a decade, Apple diligently pursued the development of an electric car, aiming to rival Tesla, led by Elon Musk. The project commenced in 2014, and over the years, significant progress was made. However, in an unexpected turn of events. Apple has opted to discontinue the project.
Approximately 2,000 team members were involved, that many of them will transition to Apple’s AI division. “On February 27, Chief Operating Officer Jeff Williams and Vice President Kevin Lynch internally revealed the decision, leaving approximately 2,000 project employees in shock.
The Special Projects Group (SPG), consisting of car team employees, division led by executive John Giannandrea. Their focus will shift toward generative AI projects. While several hundred hardware engineers and vehicle designers from the Apple car team apply for positions in other Apple teams, the exact number of layoffs remains uncertain.
In 2015, rumors surfaced about Apple’s secretive car project, codenamed Project Titan. Apple assembled a team of key leaders, including Tesla’s former Autopilot software director and the ex-CEO of the embattled EV startup Canoo, to drive the project forward.
However, over the years, Project Titan encountered several obstacles, including the departure of Apple’s car chief Doug Field in 2021. A 2022 report from The Information highlighted the project’s struggles with staff turnover, shifting plans, and internal doubts.
It was indicated that the car, rumored to stay below the $100,000 price point, would not feature the advanced self-driving capabilities initially envisioned. Redirecting resources toward AI aligns with Apple’s substantial investment in training its proprietary AI model, known as Ajax.
Recently, Apple CEO Tim Cook confirmed upcoming generative AI features, while rumors suggest AI updates for Spotlight and Xcode are in testing. Despite Apple’s pivot away from the self-driving electric vehicle endeavor, Sony and Honda continue their efforts.
